Top Five Guidelines to Crush Your New Year's Resolution

Well it's that time of year again - New Year's Resolutions. I freaking love this time of year. A clean slate where you can learn from the past (not dwell on it) and move forward, full speed ahead. Yes, you can reset goals anytime of the year. It doesn't have to be January 1st, but I love the energy of everyone doing it at the same time.

Before we move forward, let’s chat about what I’ve been hearing about New Year's Resolutions.  On one hand, we’ve got people who make all kinds of crazy goals that have no idea how they're going to keep up with them and on the other hand, we have people who make none because, well, they’ve never reached them other years so why the heck try now? I get both points of view. The first one goes a little like this: you're so excited, you want to reach for the stars, you are an all-or-none type person and if you're going to do it, why not be a rockstar? The other one goes more like this: you don't like to fail, you don't set goals, you don't want to worry about not reaching them. I hear you people, I hear you loud and clear. After all my years running health clubs, seeing what works and what doesn't work, (not just in the health and fitness industry but all areas of life), I decided to put together my top five guidelines for success.

  1. Write them down. Write your goals down in a journal or notebook, write them on your mirror, write them on little cards, write them wherever you can be reminded of them everyday!  People who write down their goals are 40% more likely to reach them.

  2. Find one person you can share your hopes and dreams with for the new year and have them hold you accountable and push you on those days you don't have it in you. Choose wisely though, make sure you pick someone that's going to encourage you and not tell you all the reasons why you can't reach your goals. Don’t share your goals with someone if they don’t have the same mindset as you, you don't want to hear all the reasons why it's impossible.

  3. When setting a goal, go big first and then back it down. What do you want to accomplish in the next year? Then break it down to monthly and daily goals. Be really honest with yourself, are you willing to do the work to get there? Your mind and body want to see success, so if you set goals that are slightly out of your comfort zone and you reach them, you can go bigger each time. For example, you don't want to go from not working out at all to going to the gym 7 days a week for an hour. You're not going to be able to keep up with that! Start out small and then keep adding on so you can see success.

  4. Dream big! Don't let your past get in your way, unless of course it is a positive, powerful one. Play it out in your mind, visualize it, see it. Think about what it would feel like to have it, before you have it. This will really help you reach your goals. Whether it's a rockin’ body, new home, more money, feel that joy and love before it's even there.

  5. Learn from others whom you admire. You don't have to do it how they did it and you don't have to reach it in the time frame they reached it, but see what you can put into your mix that works for you. After interviewing so many people who felt truly happy with themselves and were successful in life, I realized that they all had one thing in common. They all had a routine that they did every morning, before starting their day, to get into that powerful mindset. Yes, most of them did some type of meditation, but it wasn't all the same. Some worked out, some listened to jazz music, some cooked an awesome breakfast. It was so different for everyone, yet the same. They prepared themselves for the day and for life. Whether it was five minutes or two hours, they started their day with a routine so that they could show up to the life they wanted.

Well, folks I hope that helps you. Have fun, be kind to yourself, know that you are loved. What you already accomplish just being the loving creature that you are, is incredible.
